This bill is a very bad proposal. Iowa finally got in step with neighboring states to require electrical work to meet NEC (National Electrical Code) standards. A simple set of electrical "minimums" that tries to insure the safe use of electricity to protect people and property. In the past anyone could call themselves electricians and do electrical work any which ole way. Much of it very dangerous. In 2007 Iowa has said that if you are going to do electrical work, it needs to meet NEC minimums (the inspection requirements) and if you are going to call yourself an electrician, you should prove you know what you are doing (the licensing requirement). As currently written Iowa has said you can do your own electrical work on a farm or home you own, it just needs to be inspected to insure a reasonable adherance to NEC standards. Passage of HF 2182 would exempt a class of people (farmers) from needing to have reasonably safe electrical installations. Why in Gods name would anyone want to pass this. And why is an organization (Iowa Farm Bureau) pushing this. Doesn't the FB sell alot of insuance. Isn't an awful lot of fires caused by "electrical" issues. I think we need to know how many "electrical" fires were actually caused because NEC rules weren't followed!! DO NOT PASS HF2182!!
